Hurrican Katrina Relief Efforts
Over $700.00 was raised for hurricane relief through a spaghetti
supper held by the D.R. Gaul Middle School students and staff. Fifty students
worked diligently preparing and serving food to about 250 community members
on the night of the school’s Open House. All of the ingredients were donated
by families and local businesses. Generous support was given by: Beth's Farm
Market, Moody's Diner, Come Spring Café, Borealis Breads, Hannaford's and Shaw's.
The money raised will go to a middle school in Louisiana that was damaged by
Hurricane Katrina.
Students at D.R. Gaul and A.D. Gray Middle Schools in MSAD #40 have worked together
to help out with Hurricane Katrina relief. The staff and students have made
a connection with the Livaudais Middle School in New Orleans. One of the teachers
there (Kristin) is from Brunswick, Maine and is participating in the Teach for
America Program that places new teachers in economically disadvantaged areas
of the country. Because stores in the New Orleans area have no inventory, buying
essential items is almost impossible. Kristin forwarded a list of things that
are truly needed at this time. Over 1500 pens, pencils, notebooks, folders,
staples and other school supplies were donated by students and families from
both schools. Over $1000.00 was raised from a spaghetti supper, penny challenge
and donations that purchased coolers, Maine t-shirts, snack foods and personal
items. Included in the packages being sent to New Orleans are self-addressed
stamped Maine post cards from students that hopefully will be returned with
a note and with any luck the beginning of pen pals.
The truck delivered the items we sent and we have received a letter of appreciation
from the assistant principal of Livaudais Middle School in New Orleans. We are
waiting to hear from students and staff.
